6 Summer Dresses You Need In Your Closet

summer dresses for your wardrobe

It’s no secret that dresses are a staple in my closet. I wear them during every season, but summer is my favorite time of the year for dresses. The ease of slipping on a lightweight linen or cotton dress is a must in the Florida heat. Today I’m sharing six styles of summer dresses you need in your closet.

I love shopping for wardrobe basics and keeping the items in my closet simple, classic, and wearable – so I hope these tips are helpful!

1 – Shirtdress

A shirtdress is a classic throw-on-and-go summer look. They are the perfect casual chic dress. I typically shop for shirtdresses in crisp, cotton fabrics like this one to keep cool in the summer heat. Pair it with a straw hat, bag, and espadrilles and you’ll have a quintessential timeless summer look!

2 – Little White Dress

We all love a LBD, but the LWD takes centerstage in the summer {and for me here in FL almost year-round!}. The billowy shapes, delicate fabrics, and feminine silhouettes are more fitting for the season’s hotter temperatures. You can find several styles for any occasion. My personal favorite is a romantic off the shoulder neckline like this one from Tommy Bahama, but I also love this flattering shift style from Lilly Pulitzer.

3 – Day to Night Dress

There’s nothing better than a versatile dress that can take you from day to night. Think dresses that can be worn with a casual pair of white sneakers, but dressed up for an evening out by swapping the sneakers with your favorite heels.

4 – Effortless Day Dress

In the summer months when it’s hot and humid here in the south, I tend to reach for dresses in breathable fabrics, such as linen and cotton, in breezy silhouettes. Even though we’ve been spending much of our time at home this summer, I’ve still found myself gravitating towards wearing flowy maxi dresses around the house and on our evening walks around the neighborhood. Last week I purchased this one from H&M and I’m anxiously awaiting its arrival! I love the pretty floral pattern.

5 – Vacation Dress

You know those dresses that just feel festive as soon as you put them on?! The ones that are made for twirling and dancing and just make you feel happy…that’s what I’m referring to here. I get more playful with my wardrobe when we go on vacation and experiment with bolder colors and fun prints. One brand that immediately comes to mind when I think of dresses that are fit for a vacation is Lilly Pulitzer…their designs are the epitome of sun-drenched resort wear. This colorful candy striped dress with tassels that I got for our trip to Miami last summer is another favorite of mine.

6 – Transitional Dress

Towards the end of summer, I like to swap out my pastels and floral dresses for styles that are a little more season-neutral. During this time of the year, I’ll shop for neutral colors and patterns that can easily be styled with a moto jacket or blazer. On days when it gets a bit cooler in the evenings {which is rare here in Florida..but does happen occasionally!}, these types of dresses are a must-have in my wardrobe.
