Apple Picking in Connecticut

Visiting an apple orchard was at the top of our list when we traveled to Connecticut last month. Since we don’t have many festive fall activities to do in Florida, picking apples among the hilltops seemed like the perfect way to celebrate the season. Connecticut has no shortage of orchards and we decided to stop by Lyman Orchards in Middlefield after reading several positive reviews online.

The day we visited the orchards was the coldest day we experienced during our trip. I was glad that I decided to take a few layering pieces with me, especially since we were spending most of the day outdoors. The morning started out cloudy and misty but the sun eventually came out a little later in the afternoon.

Once we arrived, we headed straight to the stand to get our bags for collecting apples. The apples were organized by variety throughout the orchard. I went straight for the Braeburn section while Matt picked several of his favorite, Rome apples.

While I enjoyed picking apples, my favorite part was taking in the incredible views. The orchards sit at the top of a hill which overlooks vibrant fall foliage, pumpkin patches, and winding dirt roads. It’s the most picturesque orchard I’ve ever visited!

Once we gathered enough apples {and were ready to get out of the cold!} it was time to enjoy a cup of warm apple cider at the market.

The Apple Barrel Market is a short drive away from the orchards located next to the Lyman Homestead and Golf Club. They offer a variety of fresh produce, baked goods, and souvenir gifts…but Matt was mostly interested in the cider doughnuts! Everyone who visits New England during the fall season raves about this delicious treat so we knew it was something that couldn’t be missed. However, since I’m allergic to gluten, I found a nice selection of gluten free cookies to enjoy instead. 🙂

We purchased a few gifts to bring back home to Florida, and we had enough apples to snack on throughout the rest of our time in Connecticut!
